"MOTHER, YOU HAD ME . . ."

Many of us will have had mothers who were young, ignorant and impulsive. Some of our mothers will have known the score, but just took a chance. Some may have been subjected to sex unwillingly. But by the time we were born, almost all of them will have bonded with us, and wanted to love us and nurture us and watch us grow. But they thought, or were told, that they couldn’t keep us, and that our separation would do no harm.

On the other hand - facts must be faced - some of us had mothers who, possibly due to illness, were unable to bond with us, or were just not very interested in us.

John Lennon’s mother seemed, while he was little, to be one of those mothers, and he went to live with her sister. He and his mother stayed in touch and by the time he was 10 or so, she was able to form a closer relationship with him. His mother and his father (who had been brought up in an orphanage) separated quite soon after John was born, and it was years before John saw his father again.

This song tells us how he felt about his childhood.

"Mother"

Mother, you had me, but I never had you
I wanted you, you didn't want me
So i, I just got to tell you
Goodbye, goodbye

Father, you left me, but I never left you
I needed you, you didn't need me
So i, I just got to tell you
Goodbye, goodbye

Children, don't do what I have done
I couldn't walk and I tried to run
So i, I just got to tell you
Goodbye, goodbye

Mama don't go
Daddy come home
